Nila Pearl Towler was born to Will and Pearl Appleton on February 8, 1921 at a farm between Baird and Clyde.
She passed from this life on July 18, 2016.
Nila loved Callahan County as much as anyone having a long family line dating from the 1880's. Farming the land was difficult for these early farmers, but that deep love of the land remained deep in her heart as she canned peaches, made pickles, and shelled tons of pecans. Her cooking was recognized in the Taste of Home Magazine many times and her family was never disappointed in her wonderful meals.

Nila met her husband, John T. Towler, before the outbreak of WWII. They were married over 40 years before his passing in 1982. He had served as the Postmaster of Baird for a number of years. They enjoyed numerous trips together to the national parks and Canada.

One son, Larry Wayne Towler, preceded her in death.

After "T" passed away, Nila spent her time piecing over 100 quilts, making small lap covers, and delivering Meals On Wheels to local Baird residents. Her yard remained beautiful with every kind of flower that would stand the West Texas sun.

Church activities were at the top of her list. She attended the Baird Church of Christ where she studied the Bible and fed many preachers, ACU students, and locals as they came to visit. Her faith was the lifelong strength that took her through her 95 years.

She began her teaching career at a one room school house in Atwell, TX, a small area near Cross Plains. She earned her Bachelor and Master's degrees in education from ACC. She taught for the Baird Public Schools for 25 years and enjoyed the friendships of those students until the end of her life.

Nila is survived by two children, Karen Losher and husband John of Garland, TX and Alan Towler and wife Sandra of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, Kim Griffith and husband Craig, Greg Losher and wife Stacey, Ashley Anderson and husband Jonathan, and Aaron Towler and wife Andrea; eight great-grandchildren: Madison Losher, McKenzie Losher, MaryCate Losher, Maddox Losher, Trent Griffith, Jackson Anderson, Madaline Anderson, and Tony Towler.
