Melissa was the daughter of Asahel Aldrich and Mary B. Stalbird. Her father died on April 15, 1864 in Kentucky in the Civil War. He is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY (although his name is on a stone with Mary in Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster). In 1869 in Lancaster her mother married Lysander Knight.

Melissa first married Ephraim Clough Hoyt, son of Elisha Clough Hoyt and Judith Oakes. Ephraim died 28 June 1860 leaving her with four children:
Selinda Ellen Hoyt b. 1850
Henry E. Hoyt b. 1854
Julia Ann Hoyt b. 1856
Lucy A. Hoyt b. 1859

Ephraim was buried in Bethlehem, probably with his first wife.

She married William H. Wilkins sometime between 1860 and 1864. William died about 1869, leaving her with two children:
William E. Wilkins b. 1864
Caroline (Carrie) M. Wilkins b. 1867

Civil War records for William H. Wilkins lists this info:
Age: 25 - Born: Concord, NH -- Mustered in Co. H 9th NH Infantry on Feb 16, 1865 for 1 year as a Private -- Transferred to Co. H 6th NH Volunteers on June 1, 1865. Mustered out on July 17, 1865.

William died before 1869, because Melissa filed a Civil War pension card shows she filed for William's pension on Jan 13, 1869... certificate #226,514. On Apr 2, 1904 Melissa is listed on a Remarried Widow Pension card for William H. WIlkins, as Melissa Sedgill... certificate #226,514.

Melissa's husband was NOT the William Henry Wilkins who died May 7, 1906 in Stanhope, Iowa.

By 1869 Melissa is once again widowed and living at the Coos County Poor House with four of her children:
William E. and Carrie M. Wilkins, Julia A. and Lucy A. Hoyt. Daughter Selinda is married to John Wilkins in 1870 and son Henry is working as a laborer for Charles Hoyt in 1870.

The 1900 census said she had six children of which 3 survived until 1900, but it was 4. Selinda, Lucy, William, and Caroline all died after 1900.

About 1875 she married Joseph H. Sedgell, son of Moses Sedgell and widower of Asenath Sedgell.

Around the same time (or a couple years after) her daughter Julia Ann married Joseph's son Charles L. Sedgell. Haven't found their marriage date yet, only know they were married by 1878.

Her husband, Joseph, predeceased her in Mar 1904, and is buried in Jefferson.

Daughter Selinda (Hoyt) Webb died in 1917; Daughter Lucy (Hoyt) Tebbetts died in 1922; son William died in 1909; daughter Caroline (Wilkins) Kimball died in 1908; Son Henry Hoyt died in 1877 of Consumption; daughter Julia Ann (Hoyt) Sedgell died in 1887.

Age: 83yrs 12dys

Cause of Death: Senility

Note:
Her death certificate lists this as her burial place. There is no headstone here for Melissa. She lived in Lancaster so I can only assume that her husband, William Wilkins, may have been buried here. There is a William H. Wilkins buried here but his stone says he died in April 1864 at 30yrs old. There were a lot of William H. Wilkins running around. It is possible that this was Melissa's husband but the stone was wrong. There are no death records for that period of time so there is no way of knowing.
