Charles immigrated to the United States with his family in September 1901 at the age of 9. His family settled in the Joliet, Illinois area where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Charles became a naturalized citizen of the United States on June 22, 1918. Charles enlisted in the US Navy on October 14, 1919 which listed his civilian occupation as a painter. He served on the U.S.S. Dakota from September 30, 1920 until July 25, 1921 when he was honorably discharged.

He married Mary Barth of East Chicago, Indiana on May 12, 1923. Charles adopted Mary's son Joseph. Charles and Mary had 3 children who survived into adulthood. Charles died suddenly at the age of 50 in 1942 from a heart attack.
