Obituary for Alfred Angel.

Source: The Atchison County Mail. 18 Aug 1933

Alfred Angel, one of the pioneer residents of the Tarkio community died Friday, August 11th, aged eighty-seven years. He had been bedfast since he suffered a stroke on July 20th.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon by Rev. T. M. Grimmett. Burial was at Center Grove Cemetary.

Mr. Angel was born in Clay County, Missouri, May 2, 1846, the son of Thomas and Sarah A. Angel and second in a family of fourteen children. His own family, like that of his father, was large, consisting of seven daughters and three sons. The three sons and one daughter have preceeded their father to the grave. Mrs. Angel and the following daughters survive: Mrs. T. M. Sharp, Mrs. Austin L. Greer, Mrs. O. D. O'Neal, Mrs. M. T. McCoy, Mrs. T. C. Ward, and Mrs. Clark McColl. The deceased daughter was Mrs. Essie McElroy. The sons' names were Hugh, James, and Eugene. Mr. Angel was married on October 19, 1870 to Miss. Annie Christian, daughter of Thomas and Almire Christian. Their married life covered a span of almost sixty-three years.

The Angel home has been on a farm about two miles northwest of Tarkio for many years. Here a large family of sons and daughters were reared. Offered what looked like an exorbitant price for this farm during war times, Mr. Angel refused to sell, stating that at his age he would not care to seek another home, feeling that no matter how largely he might profit from the sale, he would probably be dissatisfied in any location. He usually visited THE MAIL office when in Rock Port and it was on one of these visits that he spoke of the offer of his farm which he had refused.

Victim of a murderous assault by a farmhand many years ago and left for dead by the assailant, Mr. Angel survived the attack to live far past man's alloted span, although he was sightless in one eye as a result of the attempt to kill him.
