Mrs. Lois Reed

Lois Maria was born June 1st, 1837 in Canada to Henry V. Barnum and Lauretta Adeliza Truman Barnum.

Her father joined the Patriot rebellion against the British and was captured and held prisoner until he was pardoned on Dec 1844. His wife, having had no communication for this time, assumed he was dead and had remarried to Asahel Plumb Murray and bore a child with her second husband. When her first husband returned and although she loved both husbands, they decided that she should stay with her baby and second husband.

While in Michigan, the family heard the gospel of Jesus Christ and became members. In the early forties they moved to Hartford, Knox Co., Illinois, near Nauvoo. They lived there a number of years and then returned to Michigan before coming to Utah in 1854 in Perrigrine Sessions Company.

When her mother left Pontiac for the West, her children were all coming but right at the last Lois Maria's young man's father died so she could not come. She married Joseph Reed and stayed in Ypsilanti expecting to come next season.

The next year, the baby came and the mother and child both died. At that time very little mail came through. Lauretta did not know her daughter was dead until someone came through and brought some of her belongings. Imagine the sorrow with such news! After a few years she lost track of Joseph Reed. She wanted so much to have her Temple work done. Later a relative-in-law had Lois sealed to him, which was a great sorrow to her mother.

Several relatives had tried to find her grave many times. A few years ago while visiting in Michigan, they went to Pontiac Cemetery to search. Reid Gardner (son of Rhoda P. Huffaker Gardner) went to the office for information. They said it was no use looking for the records were all burned in 1870. It appears that Joseph had a headstone and recorded it years after the fire so they found the grave. She was buried in 1857. He died in 1902 and was buried beside his wife in a beautiful cemetery. To find that was a joy to them all, they shed tears not of sorrow but of joy that she could be sealed to her own husband. The sealing was done June 17th, 1927.
