John F. Butler was an assistant surgeon with the 39th Massachusetts Volunteers in the Civil War. He was also important in the founding and development of Spofford / Chesterfield, New Hampshire with some involvement in the starting of the local library and involvement with the school system.

Dr. Butler married Julia Quimby on December 17, 1857. Julia gave birth to Arthur who died in infancy. After Julia's death, he married Celia A. Brewster on January 17, 1863. After Celia A.'s death he married Celia E. Johnson Putnam who also had a daughter, Vera Minnie who went by "Butler" thereafter.
