He was reportedly born in March 1843, was a laborer by trade at enlistment, and stood 5' 7" tall with brown hair and brown eyes. He married Virginia "Jane" Eyler in 1870 and fathered Clara A. (b. 06/??/80 - married James Carbaugh), Daniel I. (b. 06/??/83), Harry E. (b. 08/??/87), and Grace E. (b. 10/??/92). In 1870, he lived in Franklin Township, Adams County, and, in 1890-1900, in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, where he died in 1905.

As is common for the times, his actual age is a mystery. He enlisted at the stated age of nineteen, but given that nearly half of all the recruits from south-central Pennsylvania offered false enlistment ages, that means little, and the percentage of mendacity is far higher among younger recruits. He is not found in either the 1850 or 1860 censuses but is listed as twenty-two in the 1870 census; thirty-five in 1880, and fifty-seven in 1890, a typical mishmash of census reported ages.
