Allen “Guz” Goeser, 64

HARLAN –– Allen “Guz” John Goeser, son of Lawrence Quirin and Marie Catherine (Patten) Goeser, was born on December 11, 1951, in Harlan. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Guz attended grade school at St. Boniface and graduated from Harlan Community High School in Harlan with the class of 1969.
After high school, Allen worked on farms around Westphalia and then entered the United States Army. He served his country honorably until February 22, 1973 but remained active in the Army Reserves until his discharge on February 22, 1977. He then returned to Iowa where he owned and operated the Westside Bar.
Guz was united in marriage to Jody Koontz on October 1, 1983 in Harlan and two children: Brandi and James were born to this union. After selling the bar, Guz then worked in the road construction industry as an equipment operator at Quad City Construction. He later moved and worked in Alabama as a commercial fisherman before returning to Iowa where he worked with Delta Construction and Henningsen Construction out of Atlantic. After an accident at work, Guz retired in 2009. Guz passed away on July 11, 2016 at his home in Jacksonville, at the age of sixty-four years, and seven months.
In addition to his parents, Guz was preceded in death by his brother Gary Goeser. He is survived by his children: Brandi and her husband Jon Hallstrom of Council Bluffs and James Goeser and his fiancé Tiffany Powers of Harlan,; his grandchildren: Keyton and Lukas Francis; Tyler and Addison Hallstrom and James Goeser, Jr.; sisters: Arlene Zacharias of Persia, Theresa and her husband Denny Holtz of Walnut, and Karen Hess of Dunlap; brother Marvin Goeser and his wife Wendy, of Gainesville, TX; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services were officiated by Rev. David Smith at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa at 3:00 p.m. on August 6, 2016. Military rites were provided by the Defiance and Westphalia American Legion Post No. 707. Honorary casket bearers were his grandchildren Keyton and Lukas Francis; Tyler and Addison Hallstrom; and James Goeser, Jr. Following the service a celebration of life was held at Kirkman Community Hall in Kirkman.
