George graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1846 and then served in the War with Mexico. He was a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Dragoons and promoted to First Lieutenant “for Gallant and Meritorious Conduct in the Battle of Buena Vista, Mex.” He became sick in California and never fully recovered. He remained on “sick leave of absence” until his death, aged 35. His obituary states that he was a Captain in the U.S. Army.

A handwritten family Record at the Gardiner Library Archives states that George was buried in Oak Grove March 31, 1859.

He was the first of their children to die and George Evans (his father) erected the tomb soon thereafter – the Oak Grove Cemetery deed is dated July of 1860 but implies that he had already built the tomb.
