Lillian DeGeeter Smith, 92, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011. Lillian was born and raised in Chicago, attended St. Veronica Parish School and graduated from Alvernia High School in 1936. After performing in a church play, she met her late husband Michael E. Smith at the dance that followed, and they were married on Nov. 21, 1940. A proud retiree of Illinois Bell Telephone Company where she worked as an executive secretary and then editor for 30 years. Active in and served as an officer in many organizations. An avid sports fan since childhood she enjoyed competing in bowling, HS basketball, tennis and 40 years participation in the LBK football pool. She never missed a chance to cheer for the Cubs and Bears, loved traveling the world having adventures throughout Europe, China, Egypt, Soviet Union and Central America. At the age of 82, she left Chicago and moved to Niles, where she enjoyed making many new friends who were as dear to her as old ones. Whether traveling the world, cheering on her favorite teams or competing in Scrabble, she displayed a love of life that will continue on in the many lives she touched. Her strong spirit will continue to be felt by many. Devoted mother of Julie (Gene) Gopon, Nancy (the late Mike) Sarlin, Patty (Bill) Miner; loving grandmother of Denise (Pat) Larsen, Jeff Gopon, Kevin (Tina) Gopon, Steve (Mary) Gopon, Michael (Laura) Sarlin, Wendy (Ryan) Barton; proud great-grandmother of Julie, Jess, Austin, Kayla, Nick, Kyle, Scot, Regina, Brooke, Gene, Haley, Sammy, Renee, Sam and Michael; dear sister of Lorraine (the late Milt) Kriz and the late Francis DeGeeter; loving aunt to (the late) Linda, Wendy, Kathy, Tom, Bob, Laurie; and 21 grand nieces and nephews. Lillian never missed an opportunity to celebrate life. Visitation Friday, from 3 to 9 p.m., at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner St., Des Plaines. Family and friends will meet Saturday for a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Juliana Church, 7200 N. Osceola, Chicago. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
