J. B. Mohney, active in community

John B. Mohney, 103 Main St., Fredonia, a community leader, died at 7:30 p. m. Monday (1-25-88) in Countryside Convalescent Home, near Mercer, after a one-year illness. He was 88.

Mr. Mohney was active in community affairs, having served on borough council for seven years, and on the Fredonia-Delaware School Board for 14 years, including 11 years as secretary of the board.

He was born in Grange, Jefferson County, March 14, 1899, to James W. and Emma Bottorf (sic) Mohney.

One of the oldest residents of the community, he was Fredonia's first wage tax collector.

He was a member of Fredonia United Presbyterian Church; a life member and past president of Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department; and a life member of Mercer County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs.

Mr. Mohney was a lifelong Republican.

When the community had its eighth annual "Christmas in the Park" observance last month, he was given the honor of lighting the community Christmas tree.

In 1964, he retired with 34 years of service from Greenville Steel Car Co., where he was foreman in the fabricating department.

He was a member of Veterans Employees Association of the company and a former member and past officer of Fredonia Sportsmen's Club.

His wife, the former Muriel V. Kent, whom he married Nov. 19, 1926, died April 18, 1986.

Surviving are a son, John K. Mohney, Transfer, Mercer County coroner; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Leathers, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Mrs. Newman (Celesta) Shaulis, Norristown, Pa.; two brothers, D. Lee Mohney, Stoneboro, and Gilbert B. Mohney, Merrillville, Ind.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester, Harley, Samuel and Earl, and three sisters, Mary, Mabel, and Mae.
