Russel Eugene Snyder, 93, a Lafayette native, peacefully passed away at 6:45 pm, Wednesday, June 29th at St. Elizabeth East Hospital after a brief illness.
Russel was born May 17, 1923, to the late Ben and Bertha Snyder. He was the youngest of 9 children (3 brothers and 5 sisters).
Russel graduated from Jefferson High School and was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the 8th Air Force as a fireman on an Air Force base in Hethel, England. He also served in the same capacity in North Africa.
His marriage was to Mary Lee Miller on February 22, 1946, who preceded him in death in 2006. Together they raised 5 children.
Russel retired in 1988 from TRW/Ross Gear after 25 years of service.
Russel enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, listening to “Big Band” music, Jefferson High School basketball, and watching Purdue basketball and football games on television. He also enjoyed an occasional trip to a casino to play video poker. He also enjoyed attending any school events that involved any of his children. He loved to go camping and to travel all over the country on family vacations.
Russel is survived by 3 sons, Lynn (wife: Tanny), Mark, and Monte; daughter-in-law, Beth Snyder; along with 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Russel was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Jay Polstra; son, Gary; and a grandson, Kit.
Russel was truly an amazing man. A devoted son, husband, father, and sibling. He dearly loved all of his family.
Russel was a member of the “Greatest Generation” and will be missed. A celebration of his life will be at Hippensteel Funeral Home at 2 pm, Thursday, July 7, 2016 with visitation one hour prior.
