A Civil War veteran, he was drafted from Menallen Township to date February 25, 1865, and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg that day as a private with Co. F, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry. He contracted typhoid fever and was admitted to Auger U.S. Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia, then transferred to Armory Square U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, on July 20, 1865. Although absent at muster-out, he honorably discharged July 27, 1865, the same date as the rest of his company.
