Cheo Altamirano Rivera passed from this life on November 13, 2006 following a lengthy illness. He was born in Abilene on December 1, 1925 as the youngest of 10 children to Ysidro Rivera and Genovera Altamirano-Rivera. He was a life-long resident of Abilene, leaving only to serve during World War II on a Naval machine ship. Cheo met his wife, Martha Faye Roberson on a blind-date for bowling. They were married on April 3, 1954, after which time he became a machinist/pipe threader, employed primarily by Fort Worth Pipe & Supply Company.

He was a true son to his mother-in-law, Ella Mae Haynes-Roberson, who resided with the family until her death. He was a devoted husband to Martha and a gentle father to his children. He lived his life with humor and with honor to God?s simple blessings.

Cheo was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, and until his illness could many times be found gardening and preparing novel recipes for his church and neighbor fellowship. He was an avid walker and long-time caretaker to many of his neighbors.

He is survived by brothers, Abran Rivera and Chano Rivera, both of Abilene; children, Mary Rivera-Lutz, Geneva Rivera, Debra and husband, James Patterson, all of Abilene, and Joe Rivera and wife, Susan of Amarillo; and grandchildren, Christi and husband, Zach Murphy, David Patterson and wife, Jennifer, Jordan Lutz and wife, Donna, Michael Patterson, Katherine Lutz, Steven Rivera, and Timothy Lutz.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Liberty Baptist Church with Rev. Darvin Shipman officiating. Burial will follow in Oplin Cemetery directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
