LOVELL, Wyo. - Frances Geneva Pearson Burrell died peacefully at Deaconess Hospital in Billings, Mont., in the early morning hours of Oct. 29, 2002.

Frances was born on July 17, 1914, in Livingston, Mont., to Wallace Pearson and Milla Stadsvold Pearson. The family moved to Lovell in 1919. She graduated from Lovell High School in 1931 and then attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie, graduating in 1935. After a year of teaching school in Ten Sleep, she moved to New York City to attend library school at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, receiving her degree in 1938. After completing her studies at Pratt, she worked in the New York Public Library system for a few years before returning to Lovell. She married Clark Burrell in Lovell, on Jan. 28, 1942.

Following the war and Clark's post-war optometry school in Oregon, Frances returned to Lovell in 1950, where she spent the remainder of her 88 years. She was very active in community affairs and, in particular, was a strong supporter of library activities in both Lovell and Big Horn County. Aside from her family and the community, Frances had two other deep interests - native wildflowers and local history. As an amateur botanist, she became known nationally for her unique knowledge of local wildflowers. She was equally enthusiastic about the early history of the Northern Big Horn Basin. Through her interviews with many of the early settlers and their descendants and through her photography of historic sites, she compiled a valuable body of reference material that is used by the National Park Service and others.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Clark; and her youngest brother, David Pearson. She is survived by her brother, Jack Pearson (Lovell); her son, Steve (Washington, D.C.); and two grandchildren, Mindy Burrell (Zenica, Bosnia) and Andy Burrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Cremation has taken place and a remembrance service was held in Lovell on Saturday, Nov. 2.
