Thomas J Howell leaves new book almost ready for production
In the death of Thomas J. Howell last week there passed away a pioneer of 1850 and the author of a widely known scientific book, entitled "The Flora of Northwest America", which is a standard publication used in colleges and schools. He is survived by a widow and two son of 8 and 18 years of age, respectively. Mr. Howell devoted his life in Oregon to the gathering of material and the publication of his work, which was printed by himself under great difficulties. The work contained so many technical terms that it could not at the time it was published be printed in Portland, and Mr. Howell did most of the work and read the proof.
For some time he had been engaged in preparing another of the same nature in simplified form designed to be a popular publication for use in libraries and homes. In the preparation of the later work he was assisted by Martin W. Gorman, custodian of the Portland Forestry building, and it is understood to be nearly completed. Mr. Howell devoted his entire life to science.
