HELPER – Edward Manuel Chavez Sr., passed away peacefully on Nov. 5, 2006 in Price.

He was born Feb.12, 1926 in Salida, Colo. to Ezekiel “Zeke” Chavez and Candelaria “Vera” Vigil Chavez DeHerrera. He married Aurora “Dora” Aguilar June 12, 1954 in Spring Glen. She died Sept. 10, 1992.

Dad joined the U.S. Army March 4, 1944. He served in World War II in the 1252nd Combat Engineers, mostly in the European Theatre. He was vice president of the American GI Form in the 1960s. Dad worked for the Utah Railroad for 37 years as a laborer, track patrolman, and a heavy equipment operator. Dad enjoyed fishing, hunting and family reunions.

He is survived by sister, Frances Martinez of Helper; sons and daughters, James (Ruth) Chavez, Price; Pat (Arnie) Sosa, Helper; Gloria (Marion) Hamaker, Price; Edward (Jerry) Chavez Jr., Wellington; Tina (Juan) Serna, San Antonio, Texas; Eugene “Bob” (Julie) Baca, Houston, Texas; John Baca, Helper; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife; parents; son, Ralph Baca; and grandson, Jason Wayde Hamaker.

Funeral service Thursday, Nov. 9, 1 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 E. Main Street, Price. Family will be at Mitchell’s Wednesday evening, 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services. Burial, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.
