Son of William Francis & Anne Gibbs (KINNARD) UPSHAW, who were married 29 JUN 1899 in Coweta County, Georgia, by J. H. HALL, Minister of the Gospel (Marriage Book L, p. 78).

"Death of Little Francis UPSHAW. // The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. UPSHAW will deeply sympathize with them in the death of their little four-months-old son, Francis, which occurred at their residence, No. 1346 Third avenue, yesterday morning at 11:30 o'clock, after a short illness of pneumonia. // Mr. and Mrs. UPSHAW recently moved to this city from Monroe, Ga., Mr. UPSHAW being a member of the firm of Watkins & Upshaw, general agents for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in this territory. // The funeral will take place from the residence at 10 o'clock this morning, and the interment will be at Linwood cemetery." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Saturday, 22 NOV 1902, p. 8.]

"Funeral of Little Francis UPSHAW. // The funeral of little Francis UPSHAW, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. UPSHAW, whose death occurred Friday morning, took place from the residence, No. 1346 Third avenue, at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, conducted by Rev. J. E. WRAY, of St. Paul M[ethodist] E[piscopal] church. // The following gentlemen acted as pall-bearers: Messrs. J. K. HARRIS, C. V. HOLLIS, W. C. LOWE and B. D. WATKINS. The interment was at Linwood cemetery." [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Sunday, 23 NOV 1902, p. 3.]

Original burial record in sexton's ledger book shows Francis UPSHAW, born in Columbus, Georgia, died aged 4 months of pneumonia; buried 22 NOV 1902 in Section C, Lot 51. Resident of Columbus (address 1346 Third Avenue). The sexton's name was Jesse Alexander BEARD.

Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery," edited by Dowd et al., Vol. #, p. 267, mistakenly calls this child "W. Travis Upshaw" and shows the mother's second name as "Gibb," though these appear on the grave monument as "W. Francis Upshaw" and "Gibbs," and the marriage record cited by Autry shows the maiden name as Gibbs: William F. UPSHAW married 29 JUL 1899 in Coweta County, Georgia, to Annie Gibbs KINNARD.

On 05 JUN 2020, Beverly Bogart (Contributor #47512533 ) reported that this infant's first initial, "W.," stands for "William." She says: Margaret Mitchell [author of "Gone with the Wind"] was married to Berrian Upshaw, Memorial #6953663 . For Berrian's son "WFU III"# 28553871, I found online that "William F Upshaw I" was his grandfather. And baby "William F Upshaw II" #166440481 was his uncle [Berrian's infant brother]. So it appears Berrian named his son after this infant, his deceased baby brother. [By the way, in addition to the father's name being William Francis, the mother Annie Gibbs (KINNARD) UPSHAW had a brother named William Cleburne KINNARD. These seem to be the only two instances of a "W." name among the parents' siblings or parents. - jml]
