Husband of Mary Gibbs and son of Declaration signer Honorable Stephen Hopkins and Sarah Scott.



"Capt. JOHN HOPKINS-the second son of Gov.
Stephen, true to the instincts of the family, adopted a sea-faring life, which seemed at that time to afford the best opportunities for advancement in worldly interests, and included in its profession the noblest and most talented specimens of the race. He was master of a sloop called the" Two Brothers," and sailed for Cadiz, Spain, Aug. 3, 1751, and while engaged in coasting from port to port was taken sick with smallpox, at St. Andro, where he died July 20, 1753, aged 24 years, 8 months, and 3 days."

He married Mary, daughter of Robert and Amey (Whipple) Gibbs.

Refused a Christian burial in Spain because he was a Protestant. St. Andro is now called Santander.

*Hannah was also known as Susannah. She m John Burroughs, she m Creighton Winans of NJ. Creighton died at their home near Braddock's Grave in PA in 1790. She is believed to be buried in or near Lindale Cemetery, Clermont County, OH, where her children moved. Hannah is mentioned in Stephen Hopkins' will as Hannah Burroughs.

Also note John Burroughs later married Silas Downer's daughter in 1793. Silas Downer witnessed Stephen Hopkins' will.

It is not known whether Mary (Gibbs) Hopkins remarried. There is no history for her.
