Jo Esther Wigington, 89 of Huntsville, passed away July 1 at home after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Wigington was native of Wichita Falls, Texas and moved to Huntsville in 1959.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James D. Bradley and Pearl Mae Bradley and is survived by her husband of 69 years Wesley B. Wigington, Jr., her son James Robert "Bob" Wigington (Doris), daughters Carolyn Jo "Kay" Powell (Jerry) and Paula Diane Cook (Hugh); grandchildren Jennifer Lynne Powell Decker, Jeffrey Thomas Powell, Candace Marie Cook, Courtney Leigh Cook, and Cayla Diane Cook; great-grandchildren Addison Jane Powell, Manning Linn Decker, Anna Katherine Powell, and Emma Gaines Virginia Decker.

Mrs. Wigington received an Associate degree in English from Midwestern University, a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a Master’s degree in Special Education from Alabama A&M University.

She is a retired Huntsville City School English and Special Education teacher. She was a member of Wichita Falls Masonic Lodge Rainbow for Girls and Eastern Star, a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a First Aid instructor for the American Red Cross, a devoted mother active in PTA during her children's school years, and a volunteer at the Huntsville-Madison County Senior Center, receiving the 2015 Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame AARP Volunteer Award.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday July 5th at Laughlin Service Chapel. The service will follow at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
