Wooster resident Stanley Gault died June 29th at Cleveland Clinic. Mr. Gault was born in Wooster on Jan. 6, 1926, to Clyde and Asenath Gault, and grew up on College Avenue. Gault graduated from Wooster High School in 1943 and enrolled at The College of Wooster that fall. He attended for a year, until he was old enough to enlist in the Army Air Corps, where he served as a B-29 gunner stationed in the South Pacific for the duration of the war. Upon his discharge in 1946 he returned to The College of Wooster, where he majored in geology, was elected senior class president, and met an English major named Flo Kurtz. They both graduated in 1948 and married the following year. Gault began his career in the fall of 1948 as a GE sales trainee. After 31 years he left GE as a senior vice president to return to Wooster to become CEO and chairman of the board of Rubbermaid. Gault's father Clyde helped create the company in 1920. During his tenure at Rubbermaid the company's market value increased from $190 million to almost $4 billion. Some 35 days after retiring from Rubbermaid in 1991, Gault became chairman and CEO of Goodyear, of which he had been a board member since 1989. He is credited with helping Goodyear recover financially, in part with the highly successful launch of the company's Aquatred tire. As part of widespread cost-cutting measures, Mr. Gault eliminated some 12,000 jobs globally under his tenure, taking Goodyear from about 100,000 employees to 88,000.Mr. Gault served on other corporate boards, including Timken Co. He served on the College of Wooster board of trustees for almost 30 years and became chairman of the board in 1987, a position he held until his retirement in 2000. He was also active in the Wayne Center for the Arts, Gault Family Learning Center, and Every Woman's House.Gault was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Flo.
