Harry Wells Leigh ~ A Princeton University Alumnus

Harry Wells Leigh was born on 28 November 1874 in Princeton, Mercer, New Jersey to parents, Albert Sutphin Leigh and his wife Mary Jane Stockton. His father was the President of the First National Bank in Princeton. In the census records his father was listed as a farmer. His father was born in Cedar Grove in Mercer County.

He grew up knowing what hard farm work was all about. As an industrious child, he had the desire to obtain a college education. With this in mind, he set his mind to do just that! He picked Civil Engineering as his field of study and finished his university degree at Princeton University in 1897.

He was living in Suffern, New York working as a Civil Engineer when he met the lovely Gertrude Pauline Mansfield. They fell in love and decided to spend the rest of their lives together. Gertrude was the daughter of Romaine Stiles Mansfield and Emelia A. Moore. She was born in Suffern, New York. They happily married at 3:30 Christmas afternoon, 25 December 1902 in Suffern, New York at Christ Church by the Rev. R. S. Mansfield. It was an intimate and quiet wedding including their immediate families.

The couple moved to Tuxedo, Orange, New York and had three children by the 1910 United States Census – Helen Elizabeth, Born 15 November 1903; Catherine Van Rensselaer, Born 1 February 1905; and Robert Mansfield, born 13 October 1906. Sadly, little Robert died on 31 March 1910. On 22 October 1910, Mary Pauline joined the family.

From 1910 to 1938, the Leigh family lived in Tuxedo, Orange, New York. The family grew and flourished in the beautiful surroundings in Orange County, New York. All was well. Then something tragic happened. It was quite a sorrowful event, when on 13 May 1938, Harry died. His family mourned his loss.

His wife followed in death four years late on 3 August 1942 in Richmond, Henrico, Virginia.
