Gary L. McGill, 56, of rural Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 22, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, following an apparent heart attack.

He was born April 22, 1950, in Independence, son of Wayne LeRoy and Marie Agnes Wieser McGill. On May 17, 1969, he married Mary L. Crawford at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence.

Mr. McGill graduated from Independence High School in 1968, and served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was currently a UAW safety representative at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works.

Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Nikki Murphy of Independence; a son, Mike of Independence; two grandchildren; a sister, Linda (John) Borrett of Independence; two brothers, Dwayne of Jesup and Dean of Fort Myers, Fla.; and a foster sister, Karen Mulnix of Independence.

Preceded in death by: his parents; an infant brother; and his stepfather, Ed Langenfeld.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with burial later. Public visitation after 3 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Independence, with a 3 p.m. parish rosary, a 7 p.m. military service and an 8 p.m. vigil service.
