"George W. Huntoon served in Company F. 8th Illinois Cavalry in the Civil War. He is listed as a 20 year old farmer, a resident of Evanston, IL and native of IL., when he enlisted on Sept 7, 1861 for 3 years service. He reenlisted on Nov 30, 1863 and was discharged on July 15, 1865 with the rank of Sergeant. The 8th Illinois Cavalry fired the first shots at the Battle of Gettysburg."
