The son of Van E. and Mae Brown Davis, he was raised and educated in Grinnell. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. McKean in the Pacific. Van was married to Darlene Louise Smith September 22, 1948, in Iowa City and the couple made their home in Grinnell. He was employed with Maytag in Newton for several years and later started his own business, Van's Appliance Store in Grinnell. He also operated Laundromats in Grinnell and Montezuma and serviced all makes of washer and dryers. He retired from his business in 1998 and began working at Classic Car Wash in Grinnell until recently. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Linda Davis of Grinnell; one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Ray Wolver of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Shelly Davis of West Des Moines, Lisa Davis of Grinnell, and Brandon Wolver of Kellogg; and four brothers, Jim Davis of Newton, Mississippi, Leo Davis of Covington, Washington, John Davis of Grinnell, and Steve Davis Bloomington, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene in 1997; and one son in infancy, Randy Davis.
