Bradbury True Dinsmore was born in Anson, Maine. Dinsmore served in the Maine legislature, and was a lumber baron in the Kennebec River Valley. He lost his lumber business in the Panic of 1857. Dinsmore drove cattle and horses with his brother to the Humboldt area of California. He then moved his family to Hydesville where he opened a mercantile store. Eventually, Dinsmore moved to Santa Barbara for his son, Augustus', health. In Santa Barbara he bought two blocks on Garden Street from Samuel Brinkerhoff. In July 1868, he purchased a 130 acre ranch in Montecto from Elisha Pierce (the current San Ysidro Ranch) for $3600. Dinsmore introduced thin-skinned Florida style oranges, grew sweet potatoes, almonds, bananas, strawberries and poi. (primary source: Yda Storke)
