JEAN M. ALEXANDER 1943 - 2016
Norwich - Jean M. Alexander, 72 of Norwich, CT, N. Myrtle Beach, SC and Wheelock, VT passed away at Backus Hospital on June 21, 2016, in the arms of her daughter, Dawn and a special friend, Patricia Lewis. She was born on July 23, 1943 in Richmond, VA, daughter of the late Morris and Fannie Greenspoon.
Jean spent her early years in Wilmington, DE. She graduated from Pierres Dupont High School and later received a BS in Education from Central Connecticut State University.
Mrs. Alexander was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served from 1964 to 1967 and also the United States Naval Reserve. During her years in the Navy and as a dependent, she lived in various locations throughout the country and finally settled in Norwich, Connecticut.
Mrs. Alexander was hired as an Electronics Instructor at the Norwich Regional Vocational Technical School in 1982 and was subsequently promoted to Electronics Department Head before transitioning into Administration. As an Administrator, she developed the position of Regional Assistant Director for Adult Education, that served Norwich Tech, Windham Tech in Willimantic, and H.H. Ellis Tech in Danielson, CT.
In 1997 she served as Assistant Director of Windham Technical School in Willimantic before her promotion to a Central Office Staff position in Middletown, CT. She retired in 2002 from the Connecticut Vocational Technical School System as the Trade and Industry Consultant for High Tech Trades.
Upon her retirement she kept busy pursuing her interests such as sewing, quilting, and traveling.
She is survived by her children, Mark Alexander (Sheryl) of Raeford, NC and daughter, Dawn Alexander of Chantilly, VA; grandchildren Mikel Alexander, Sarah Kopke and Ashton Hagerstein, all of Germany, Thomas and Matthew Sidney of Chantilly, VA., and two great grandchildren, Colin and James Kopke both of Germany. A brother Gerald Greenspoon of Jacksonville, FL as well as several nieces and nephews, and a very dear friend and travel companion Patricia Lewis of Norwich.
During her life, Jean was a patient, honest and positive role model for her children, their friends and other members of her extended family, and a true and loving friend. Jean embodied the words, "I talk, you listen, I ask, you advise, I cry, you comfort, I succeed, you celebrate, I love, you love right back."
She always knew what was needed. That was Jean's way, not only with her children and their friends but with everyone she knew. Jean will be missed, beyond measure by her family and friends.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at St. Mary's Mausoleum, 815 Boswell Ave., Norwich, CT on Friday, July 8th, 2016 at 11:30am.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a cancer research program of your choice of to the Susan Spera Memorial fund at Grasso Technical School, Groton, CT.
