During WWII combat action in the Hurtgen Forest, Germany, Joseph Majerick received a Battlefield Commission from 1st/Sgt. of K Company, 311th Infantry, 78th Division to 2/Lt. He then became the 3rd platoon leader in the same company. For wounds received in action on 7 February 1945 at Schmidt, Germany he earned the Purple Heart.

In 1946, Joe reenlisted for 3 years, but the Army would not accept his commission. He reenlisted as a T/Sgt which is shown on his grave marker.
