Wilbur Angus Atherton was born on February 18, 1879 in the Town of Paw Paw in Dekalb County, Illinois. He was the child of William M. and Eleanor Stone Atherton. As a young man, he worked at home on the family farm that had been in the Atherton family since his grandfather, Ralph Atherton, moved to Dekalb County in the 1850s. In 1904, he married Mary Agnes Kirby of Malta Township. He continued to farm in Shabbona Township. Around 1915, Wilbur, Mary and their two sons, LaVerne (born 1910) and Wayne (born 1913), moved to Kossuth County, Iowa. Wilbur purchased a farm in Burt Township. A daughter, Margarget, was born in Iowa in 1917. Unfortunately, the farm failed and was lost to back taxes. The family returned to Illinois in 1929, settling in Aurora (Kane County), where Wilbur worked for the local gas utility. Wilbur and Mary eventually moved to Naperville (DuPage County), where Wilbur ran an appliance sales business. Wilbur passed away on February 18, 1954 at the age of 75 years.
