James H M Smith was the son of James Hutton Smith 1782–1827 and Prudence aka Prudy McGee 1781–1822.

Missouri marriages confirms that James H M Smith (1806-1867) became the handsome groom to the very pretty Martha Patsey Williams in Greene County, Missouri on 4 Jan. 1835. James and Martha were the proud parents of nine known children over a period of 31 years.

James, who was probably called Jim, suffered the loss of his beloved Martha on 8 SEPT 1897 in Polk, Polk Co., Missouri.

James passed away on Sep. 16, 1867 in Polk County, Missouri.

This copy of his picture was given to me by Martha E Smith, daughter of William Harvey Smith, who was the son of Lenna Hutton Smith. She wrote that she had visited the Smith farm near Brighteon, Missouri with her parents in the early 1900's when it was still owned by William T. or "Big Bill" Smith and his wife Nan.

James H M. Smith tombstone was photographed on what used to be part of the property held by James H.S. Smith

Thanks to a couple of local persons, namely Carl Locke, for helping to find the grave and stone. The grave itself is located near a small branch of a river, but the last I knew the stone no longer marked the grave. Cows pastured in the area had knocked the stone over, and it was held in a local garage.
