James had a daughter with first wife Rhoda Everett. Hattie died at age 4 in 1875 of diptheria. He was widowed and then married Laurette Young in 1876.

Hatch's Battalion, Minnesota Cavalry
Mustered in at Fort Snelling and St. Paul, Minnesota in 1863. Two additional companies were raised in 1864. The battalion was originally assigned to Pembina, Dakota Territory and remained there until May 1864 when it was moved to Fort Abercrombie and other small posts until mustered out in 1866. CO.E&F were assigned to Frontier Duty.
