Sara Eleanor Spires, 85, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital-Spartanburg. Born February 4, 1931, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Edward Theodore and Ada West Spires and was predeceased by her only brother, Edward T. Spires, Jr.

Sara was a very proud graduate of Converse College and received her Master's Degree from the University of South Carolina. She began her teaching career at Greer High School and retired after 35 years of service at Spartanburg High School where she was a math teacher and guidance counselor. She was also a member of the Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority who honored her with the distinction of Order of the Rose.

Sara was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, participated in the choir and the Bible Study Circle, along with many other activities.

Surviving are her sister-in-law, Caroline K. Spires of Abingdon, VA; nephews, Eric E. Spires (Denise) of Columbus, OH and their son, Eric (Stephanie) and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Eric, and Elyssa; Steven T. Spires (Karen) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and their children, Steven (Kelly), Sara and Michael; and Mark P. Spires of Abingdon, VA.

Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 PM Saturday, June 25, 2016, in the Parlor at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM, in the Chapel, conducted by The Rev. Joanne Hull. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
