He was among those listed from New Scotland who enlisted, were drafted, or furnished substitutes during the Revolutionary War. He is shown in Federal Census Records in Albany Co.: 1790, Rensselaerwyck; 1800, Watervliet; 1820-1830, Bethlehem; 1840, New Scotland - reflecting the several changes in political boundries rather than any movement on John's part. John and Margaret are buried very near the rear door of the New Scotland Presbyterian Church, where their tombstone indicates that he died aged 91 years, and she aged 88.
John married 4 July 1784, at the Schoharie County Courthouse, Margaret Connel,* daughter of John Connel.* Margaret was born ca. 1762, died 9 January 1850, New Scotland, NY. She is also buried in the New Scotland Cemetery.
