Son of the American Revolution – Descendant of James Breckenridge who served in Colonel Preston's Regiment with the Virginia militia.

He was the son of John B. Breckinridge and Caroline Heiskell Breckinridge.
On Thursday, June 1, 1876 as Alexander V. Breckinridge, he married Bettie C. Wright, daughter of R.L. Wright of Loundoun County, Virginia at Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J.B. Hubard, D.D. at Christ Church.
They were the parents of three children.

At age 29 years, he enlisted on July 11, 1861 at Camp Clark, Texas as a Private and mustered into Company F, 4th Texas Infantry.
On April 1, 1862 he was transferred into Company C, Virginia Staunton Light Artillery.
He was listed as on rolls April 26, 1862; Court martialed March 5, 1864 and suspended from duty.
He was listed on rolls April 30, 1864; October 31, 1864; February 28, 1865.
He was wounded on April 6, 1865 at Sailor's Creek, Virginia where he lost his right arm.
On April 11, 1865 he took the Oath of Allegiance at Farmville, Virginia.
On December 28, 1862, he was promoted to 2nd Lieut.
He became a Steward at the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Institution in Staunton, Virginia. He was a Civil servant and farmer.
