Bernardina was the second born and only female in her family of four full brothers and half-brother Frederick Mauntel (from her mother's previous marriage to Alfred Mauntel). Bernardina married Leon Joly of France on 13 Jan 1880 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. They are the parents of seven children: Alfred Leon, Mary Anna, Lula Augusta, Anna Johanna, Joseph Leo, John Joseph, & Leona Catherine Joly.
