A private graveside service was held for Margaret E. “Bette” Heeter, 96, of Davenport on Tuesday at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Bette passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at St. Mary Healthcare and Rehab Center in Davenport with her family by her side.

Bette was born in Davenport, the daughter of Fred and Minnie (Goard) McMullen. She married her high school sweetheart, Lee Dougherty. Lee was killed in World War II. In 1947, she married Roy C. “Bus” Heeter in Davenport, with whom she had five children. Bette worked as a school teacher, homemaker, secretary, interviewer for Per Mar Security Services, and as a receptionist at St. Luke’s emergency room. In addition to being an excellent cook and quilter who sewed her own clothes and drapes, she was a good bowler, accomplished bridge player, and an amazing piano player. Bette especially loved her grand kids and her dogs, Colonel and Cutty.

She is survived by two Sons: C. Curtis “Bump” Heeter of Cortez, CO, Todd Heeter of Davenport; two Daughters: Dr. Lora (Mel) Melnicoe of Denver, CO, Amy (Dan) Erven of Tallahassee, FL; 6 Grandchildren: Hannah and Ian Melnicoe, Travis, Alex, and Mackenzie Erven, and Tony (Jennifer) Heeter; and a Great-Grandson: Tug Heeter

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee; second husband, Bus Heeter; a son in 1972, Roy Thomas Heeter; sister, Ruth McMullen; and brother, Fred “Scoopy” McMullen.
