STAUNTON — Aaron R. Ahrens, 89, of Staunton, Illinois, passed away at 5:58 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Heritage Health in Staunton.

He was born on October 24, 1926, in New Douglas, Illinois. He was the son of Edwin H. and Gertrude (Arnold) Ahrens. He was baptized on November 21, 1926, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Douglas, Illinois. He was confirmed on May 12, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Staunton.

He married Shirley M. Wilder on February 15, 1953, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Livingston, Illinois. She preceded him in death on August 25, 2009.

He was a farmer and owned a small trucking business. He was also a real estate salesman. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton, Zion Men's Club, Madison County Farm Bureau, A.T.A., Midwest Tool Collectors and Illinois Blacksmith Association. He was an avid collector of antique farm related items, tools and anvils.

He is survived by four daughters and one son, Carolyn (Keith) Bomkamp of Wood River, Illinois; Evelyn (Dan) Bilyeu, of Gillespie, Illinois, Doris (Gary) Coalson of Staunton; Janet (Dave) Hall of Staunton; and Kenneth Ahrens of Creve Coeur, Missouri; 12 grandchildren: Benjamin (Emily) Bomkamp, Heather (Steve) Ortbals, Melanie (Jason Baima) Bauer, Thomas Bauer, Beth (Matt) Bauer-Capocci, Bradley Bauer, Kyle Bauer, Brian (Becky) Coalson, Michael (Annie) Coalson, Jeffrey Coalson, Sara Hall and Kelsey Hall; eight great-grandchildren, Hugo and Hazel Ortbals, Landon Bomkamp, Bryce and Brooke Coalson, Lucas and Avery Coalson, Gerti Bauer-Baima, 1 stepgreat-grandson Evan Bardsley, one sister, Marie (Vernon) Mindrup.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Bauer, and a brother, Edward Ahrens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 23. The Rev. Kelly Mitteis will officiate.

Burial will be at Spangle Cemetery, south of Staunton.

Memorials may be made to Spangle Cemetery or Zion Lutheran Church.
