Company C 56th Georgia Regiment Infantry
He enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 13, 1862
By June of 1863 he was in the battle of the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi During this battle John was wounded in his left foot and his eyes were badly injured. He had a noticeable limp the rest of his life. In a newspaper clipping his legs were described as crooked as cradle fingers , yet he was a hard worker and was mentioned for chopping and acre and a half of cotton at top speed. Cradle fingers were a type of farm implement. In 1897 he is almost blind and by 1907 in his requests for relief he is totally blind. He was at Camp Chase , Ohio- Richmond, Virginia - City Point , Virginia - Louisville, Kentucky. He was also hospitalized in Richmond, Virginia.
He was discharged on March 4, 1865.

He and Susan Elizabeth O'Mary were married shortly after the war on July 21, 1865 in Carroll County, Georgia

John was a Methodist preacher .
According to a newspaper clipping dated May18, 1918 he filled a regular appointment at the Methodist Church in Phil Campbell, Franklin County, Alabama. The church was destroyed by a huge tornado in 2011. As a young girl my family and I attended this church as well. I was married there.

John W. Arnold February 1867 married Sarah Elizabeth Bettie Johnson December 22,1888 in Troup County , Georgia. She is buried at Walnut Hill, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
George Monk Arnold born June 1871 married Nellie Scott Rice on December 9, 1894 in Franklin County, Alabama. She is buried in Hughes County, Oklahoma.
