During the WWI era the Rev. William Miller Reid became involved with the wife of another curate named William Arthur Birks in the Immingham, Lincolnshire, England region. The married lady's name was Anna Marie (Laing) Birks. William Miller Reid and Anna ran away together. A scandal followed. William had left a wife and daughter while Anna left behind a husband and daughter. Anna Birks kept her married surname while William simply assumed the surname of Birks. In 1929, now with 4 children, William and Anna immigrated from England to Canada aboard the steamship "Empress of Scotland," eventually settling in the province of Alberta. Oldest daughter Joan Marie later wrote a book on her personal life but much of the history on her parents is incorrect. Seemingly the Birks children never knew the real history of their parent's lives.
A group of amateur genealogists traced and fully documented William Miller Reid's life story several years ago.

Father ...
Here is a thought which starts up from afar. Which leaps over fences and creeds which would bar. Courtesy and kindness which comes from the heart are like gold from the mine or songs of a lark.
