LINEBERRY

On Sunday, May 24, 2015, Anthony "Toney" Wayne Lineberry Sr. passed away peacefully, painlessly and surrounded by his family. Toney was born on January 12, 1960, but he told many that he was reborn on January 20, 1978, when he was in a life-threatening car accident that made him quadriplegic. Even after his accident, Toney was always a fighter and champion. Doctors predicted that he would never live past the age of 35. At 55, he still leaves us too soon. We find peace and inspiration in knowing that despite his disability, he lived those years more fully than most.

Toney was preceded in death by his daddy, Don Lineberry, who we know he is walking beside and laughing with in heaven. He is survived by his mama and our angel, Eva Johnson; his beloved three children (the triplets), Amanda, Don and Anthony Lineberry; sisters, Terry Schools and her husband, CB, Donna Koehler and her husband, Mike and Cathy Jackson; brother, Tommy Lineberry and his wife, Kellie; and 10 adored nieces and nephews.

Toney meant the world to his family and he touched lives all around the country. After his accident, Toney became a motivational speaker and encouraged people to "Buckle up for Toney" and to "focus on what's right and not what's wrong." When his three children were born, Toney went back to school. He realized that "not being able to read or write was a greater disability than not being able to walk." He got his start at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, where he later became a professor and was awarded an honorary degree. He graduated magna cum laude from Randolph-Macon College and then obtained his juris doctorate from the University of Virginia. While he won many awards, his most cherished were the Virginia Rehabilitant of the Year (1982), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Award for Public Service (1984), the Outstanding Young Virginian Award (1988), the Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA) Award (2000) and the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch on its way to Salt Lake City in 2002. Toney also proudly served two terms on the Virginia Disabilities Services Council and also served on the State Rehabilitation Council since 2009. He was a tireless advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. Most importantly, we have learned from Toney the power of a resilient smile. In his last days, even through pain, Toney blessed his family by always greeting them with a warm, bright and unforgettable smile.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 28 at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., where a service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 29. After the service, the family will travel to Galax, Virginia and hold a graveside service at 5 p.m. in Hebron Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to start a scholarship fund in Toney's honor. Contributions may be made to the JSRCC Community College Educational Foundation in honor of Professor Toney Lineberry at P.O. Box 26924, Richmond, Va. 23286-9243 or online at www.reynolds.edu/givenow.
