Our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Joseph Melvin Glenn, age 95, passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2016 in Yakima, Washington. Mel was born September 19, 1920 in Nibley, Utah to Joseph Lund Glenn and Annie May Gibbons. Mel married Wanda Beth Rasmussen (deceased 1983) in the Logan, Utah LDS temple on December 18, 1946 and they brought nine children to their family: Gary Scott (Tina) Glenn, Shari Lyn (Kent) Johnson , Susan Kae (Lonnie) Ellis, Rickey Jay (Lisa) Glenn, Gregory Melvin (Shawn) Glenn, Dana Weston (Elaine) Glenn, Suzanne Lynne (Brad) Buchsieb, Lisa Robin (Blair) Squires, and Robert Jamie (Karina) Glenn, 41 grandchildren, and 69 greatgrandchildren. (Three of the grandchildren are deceased.) He is preceded in death by two sisters, Alta Hansen, Mercy Allen and three brothers Marshall Glenn, Preston Glenn, and an unnamed infant brother. He served two and a half years as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. He served in the United States Army, assigned to a unit which trained officers to transport artillery equipment with pack mules. Mel attended school in Logan, Utah at Utah State Agricultural College and received a Bachelor's degree in Agronomy in 1947 and a Master’s degree in Animal Nutrition in 1952. In 1951, he began homesteading eighty acres of sagebrush on the Roza Irrigation Project in Zillah, Washington. After losing Wanda to cancer in 1983, Mel married Frances Mae Pierce McAvoy (deceased 2015) on October 22, 1983. A new branch was added to the family with Frances's grown children, Edgar Allen McAvoy Jr., Kathleen Kleyth, and Marilyn Mae Greenberg and their families. Mel and Frances retired to Yakima in 1987. As a member of the LDS Church, Mel served as a High Councilor, Bishop, Home Teacher, Employment Counselor, and an Ordinance Worker in the Seattle Temple. He was an active member of the Toppenish Ward, the Sunnyside Ward, and the Yakima Fifth Ward. He had many dear friends through his associations with the LDS Church. He farmed for 35 years, owning farms in Zillah, Toppenish, Sunnyside, and Whitstran. Mel spent 25 years volunteering at Memorial Hospital. He played tennis at Kissel Park until, at 92, his body would no longer cooperate. He tutored for many years at Wide Hollow Elementary School. The family expresses deep gratitude to their sister, Sue Ellis, for her daily care of our father. He looked forward to her daily visits and she made his last years bearable. We also appreciate Angie Testerman, his caregiver, and hospice for their conscientious and diligent care that allowed Mel and Frances to live out their lives in their own home and enjoy a degree of independence and control in the closing days of their lives. Joseph Melvin Glenn left a legacy of Christian service, hard work, kindness, and a wonderful family. He gave life to many, is loved by many, and he will be deeply missed by we who remain.
