Lulu Hawkins
PIMA: Funeral services for Lulu P. Hawkins, 80, who died December 26, 1981 in Mt. Graham Community Hospital in Safford, were conducted December 28 in the Pima First Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with Counselor Jim Lee officiating.
Music was furnished by the Relief Society Chorus, with Christine Thatcher as the organist and Susan Bingham as chorister. The opening hymn was "Sometime We'll Understand." The invocation was offered by Jay Dee Colvin and the life story was given by Albert Carpenter. A special number was "Beyond the Sunset," which was followed by the sermon by Bishop Larry Crockett. The closing hymn was "Goin' Home." Vard Lines gave the benediction.
Concluding services and interment followed in the Eden Cemetery, with Jake Colvin giving the dedicatory prayer. Casket bearers were her grandsons; Terry Bryant, Gary Graves, Steve Bingham, Darren Hawkins, Randy Hawkins, Richard Hawkins, Kurt Hawkins, Billy Hawkins, Mark Hawkins, Dean Hawkins and Danny Hawkins.
Mrs. Hawkins was born August 1, 1901 in Eden to John Daniel Colvin and Pernecia Jane Smithson. Her early schooling was in Eden; then she attended Gila Academy. When she finished school she started her teaching career in Eden. In 1921 she married David Elisha Hawkins and they made their home in Eden. During the 1940's Mrs. Hawkins returned to teaching in Eden and Sanchez schools for seven or eight years. She was active in the Eden and Pima Wards of the LDS Church, having held various positions in different organizations.
She is survived by sons, Douglas and Dan, both of Pima, and Bill and Dave, both of Eden; daughters, Marjorie Tucker of Phoenix and Loretta Graves of Eden; brothers, "Doc", Rollo, and T.H. "Shem" Colvin, all of Eden, and Ernest of Phoenix; a sister, Blanche Hancock of Pima; a half-sister, Melba J. Daniel of Safford; 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Home of Safford.
