Eunice Sindy Locke Krebs passed away at Well-Spring Retirement Community, Greensboro, NC on June 3, 2016 at the age of 99.

She was born on June 1, 1917 in Moorefield, West Virginia to Lorenzo Fillmore Sindy and Sallie May Sindy and was the youngest of three children. Her father was a bookkeeper and her mother was a school teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1934, Eunice Sindy graduated from Moorefield High School as the valedictorian of her class. Math was her favorite subject and, after graduation, she attended Catherman Business School in Cumberland, Maryland for one year. Her first job was in Charleston, WV as an assistant to the State Auditor of West Virginia, working in the state capitol and living in a boarding house nearby. It was here that she met her future husband, Mr. James R. Locke. He lived in an apartment over the garage of her boarding house. They dated for two years and were married in Charleston, WV in 1938. He was a jeweler and watchmaker and they later opened their own family business, a jewelry store, J.R. Locke Jewelers, at 516 D. Street in South Charleston. Her husband, James R. Locke, died in 1968 following a brief illness. They had two sons, James R. Locke, II and John R. Locke. James R. Locke II, the oldest, was tragically killed in a traffic accident in 1993. John lives in Greensboro, NC and is a Music Professor and Director of Bands at UNC Greensboro.

Eunice lived in Charleston, WV from 1935 until 2007, when she moved to Greensboro to be closer to her son, John. In Greensboro, she lived at the Well-Spring Retirement Community. Her husband passed away at a relatively young age and, in 1972, Eunice was married a second time to long-time friend Charles Gregory Krebs of Charleston, WV who had recently lost his wife. Mr. Krebs died of cancer just three years later. Eunice was a member of the St. Marks United Methodist Church in Charleston, WV. She loved to crochet and would make afghans for family members for Christmas. She also enjoyed playing bridge and, while in Charleston, was a member of a bridge club that played every week.

More recently, she played bridge and other games on her laptop computer. She had many family pictures, old and new, on her computer that she enjoyed. She also loved playing Bingo at Well-Spring on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

Eunice was preceded in death by her husband James R. Locke, her second husband Charles Gregory Krebs, her oldest son, James R. Locke II, and her grandson, John Philip Locke. She was also preceded in death by her brother Raymond Brown Sindy, and sister, Janet A. Sindy, both of Moorefield, WV.

She is survived by her son John R. Locke, Greensboro, NC; grandchildren Victoria Locke Kossos of Plainfield, IN; James Gregory Locke of Austin, TX; Matthew Ryan Locke of Pawleys Island, SC; Sindy Locke Cary of Morrisville, NC; Jenna Beth Locke of Charleston, SC; and Jeffrey Michael Locke of Charleston, SC; and four great-grandchildren.

Eunice Sindy Locke Krebs will be interred at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, WV on Thursday, June 9 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Heart & Hand Community Service Center, 4963 MacCorkle Avenue, South Charleston, WV 25309 or to Greensboro Urban Ministry, 305 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27406. Good Shepherd Mortuary of South Charleston is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made at [email protected].
