William Gatton Coen was born on March 15th, 1839 in Antioch, Monroe County, Ohio to parents Levi and Sarah (Gatton) Coen, both from Ohio. He was the 4th of 6 children born to Levi and his first wife Sarah. The family was living in Indiana when William’s mother died. He was only seven years old at the time. When he was 13, his father remarried and fathered 10 more children with William’s stepmother, Delilah. Before he was 18, the family had moved to Morristown, Rice County, Minnesota. In 1861, William enlisted in the Union Army as a Private and mustered into “G” Co. Minnesota’s 1st Infantry. He was wounded on September 17th, 1862 at Antietam, Maryland and again on July 2nd, 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was Mustered Out on May 5th, 1864. Five months later, in the Fall of 1864 in Faribault, Minnesota, he married Lydia Armettie Ressler, daughter of Jacob and Caroline (Geedy) Ressler. Together, they raised a family of 11 children. Between the time of the birth of his twins, Ida and Ada Mabel in 1883 and 1886, William, his family and his brother Jonathan’s family relocated to and homesteaded in Custer County, Nebraska. On February 7th, 1933, having outlived his wife by 3 years, William passed away at the ripe old age of 93. He is buried in Sargent, Custer County, Nebraska.
