Philip Stuart Ball, III of Chattanooga, TN passed away June 11th, 2016, following a long battle with Parkinson's, complicated by CBD (Corticobasil Degeration). Phil went peacefully, surrounded by family and friends at his son’s house in Hixson, TN.

Phil was born in Chicago, IL, December 22, 1949, to the late Philip and Madeleine Ball. He was a 1967 graduate of Glenelg High School in Howard County, MD. Phil graduated from Auburn University with a BS in chemical engineering in 1972 and attended the Executive MBA program at Loyola College.

During Phil’s years at Auburn, he was a coop student with the W.R. Grace Co. in Baltimore, MD and was subsequently hired working as a process development engineer from 1972 to 1974. Phil was quickly promoted to process supervisor (1974), Project Leader (1976), Plant Superintendent (1979), Manufacturing Manager (1980), General Manager of the RANEY Catalysts and specialty minerals division of W.R. Grace in Chattanooga, TN (1990), and ultimately General Manager - rare earth and kaolin merchant products in both Chattanooga, TN and Aiken, SC. He retired from W.R. Grace in 2012 after serving the company for over 40 years.
During his time with W.R Grace,

Phil was active in the community, and was extremely proud of his commitment to outreach with Grace. He was involved in many community activities, including the Boy Scouts Of America, United Way, and the Chattanooga Manufacturers Association.

Phil achieved many milestones for the Grace family in Chattanooga, receiving many awards in his 40 years. He enjoyed success in the areas of safety, quality, productivity, and labor relations. In 1995 he received the W.R. Grace Chairman’s Award for site environmental remediation, and won Chattanooga Audubon Societies 1993 Corporate Award for Environmental Excellence.

Phil lead the most successful United Way effort in Grace North America (per capita) for over 20 years, and was named Chattanooga United Way Volunteer of the Year in 2009, and then was elected into the United Way Hall Of Fame in 2012. Phil was also the recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award in 1998, the highest award bestowed on BSA volunteers. He was extremely proud of his of Character Education Partnership with the local school system (Hamilton County, TN) that impacts more than 42,000 students annually. Despite his many awards, he always attributed his success to his family, friends, and employees.

Phil greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and grandsons, riding his bike on the Riverwalk in Chattanooga, and vacationing with his wife Mary. He enjoyed the live music scene in Chattanooga, and was constantly “finding” new music for friends and family to listen to. Phil’s love of family was always his top priority.

A service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Hamilton Funeral Home on Hixson PIke, at 1:00 pm. The family will gather with friends on Saturday, July 16, 2016, from 11:00 am-1:00 pm at the funeral home.
