Enlisted as a Substitute for David D. Bradley on 8/19/1864 at age 18 at Kalamazoo, MI, as a private and was mustered into Co. B, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters.
He was Mustered Out on 7/28/1865 at Delaney House,
He applied for a pension on 4/9/1896 from the state of NE; application # 1,176,106.

Arnold Sentinel, Arnold, Nebraska, Thursday, August 15, 1929, Page 7, Col. 3: Nathan S. Allen, Old Soldier Goes to His Reward. Following a short illness of ten days Nathan S. Allen, old soldier of the Civil War days, died at the home of his daughter in Broken Bow, Thursday, August 8, 1929, at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 27 days. Mr. Allen has been a resident of the Arnold community for many years, until just lately when he went to live with his daughter at Broken Bow. Services were held from the M. E. Church, and an escort of American Legion men accompanied the remains to the grave. He was buried in the Arnold Cemetery.

Obituary.
Nathan S. Allen, son of Joseph and Anna Allen, was born at Marion, Ind., March 19, 1845, and died at Broken Bow, Nebraska, August 8, 1929. His boyhood days were spent in his native state and Michigan. In 1864 he enlisted in the United States Army, being associated with the First Michigan Sharp Shooters and served for a period of eleven months.
He was united in marriage to Miss Luetta Restine on September 19, 1891, at Gothenburg, Nebraska. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Henderson and Mrs. Inez Alexander, both residing at Broken Bow at this time. He wife preceded him in death in 1914. He homesteaded in Custer, settling near Etna and his home as been in Custer county since that time. He was raised in he faith of the Quaker Church and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Gothenburg when a young man, his membership was transferred to the Methodist Church at Arnold eighteen years go where it has remained since, where he worshiped faithfully during his residence there.
Death came at the close of an active life, after an illness of ten days. He is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Henderson and Mrs. Inez Alexander of Broken Bow, eleven grandchildren, two brothers and one sister, residing in the state of Indiana.
