Katherine Griffith Carman, 83, long time resident of Salt Lake City, Utah and Lincoln City, Oregon, died peacefully Tues, Dec. 8, 1992, of natural causes in Bellingham, Washington.
Anna Katherine was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, June 7, 1909, to Mabel A. and John L. Griffith. In her youth in Salt Lake City, she served as an Honor Queen of Bethel No. 1, International Order of Jobs Daughters, and as a member of the Lynn Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She graduated from East High School and later earned a degree in accounting at the University of Utah where she served as a founding member and first President of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
She was active in scouting, the AFS International Student Exchange Program, and was instrumental in improving public school reading programs. Mrs. Carman, in partnership with her husband, Frank C. Carman, founded several radio stations throughout the intermountain states, including KLUB am and KISN fm, and KUTV Channel 2. She actively managed a farm and ranch during her retirement years.
Throughout her life, she appreciated music and poetry, loved flowers and gardening, and was especially fond of the ocean and the Pacific Northwest where she resided during the past 22 years.
She will be missed by her family and friends and remembered for her gentle kindness and her unwaivering devotion to her family.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Carman. Survived by her children, Ann C. Robinson, Sedona, Ariz.; Dr. Frank C. Carman II, Columbus, Ohio; Patricia C. Anderson, Bellingham, Wash.; Lauren Jean Carman, Lancaster, Penn.; George M. Carman, Corvallis, Oregon; Joan C. Heffner, Las Vegas, Nev.; Dr. John G. Carman, Smithfield; and 19 grandchildren.
Friends are invited to call at Evans & Early Mortuary, 574 East First South, in Salt Lake, Friday evening, December 11, 6-8 p.m. An informal gathering of friends and relatives will be held between 10-11 a.m. Saturday, December 12, at the mortuary. Private family services will follow. Interment, Mount Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers family suggests contributions to the Intermountain Unit of Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children.
