Esther, 91, of Charlotte, MI, died Monday, June 13, 2016 at Brookdale Assisted Living near Grand Blanc, MI. Esther was born to Elmer and Nina (Hicks) Young on the family farm outside of Olivet.

She graduated from Olivet High School in 1941, and married Stanley Horn on February 11, 1943 in Charlotte, Michigan. During World War II, Esther followed her husband to New York and Texas as he served as a Military Policeman, and later a member of the Charlotte American Legion Auxiliary. This early traveling experience continued throughout her life visiting parts of Canada and Mexico, and most of the United States except for Washington and Oregon.

Esther was active in the Winnebago Travel Club and a former Club President, Travel Trailer Club of the Midwest, Cheerful Campers, and Good Sam Club making many friends in her travels. Esther was a homemaker and also worked for Michigan Bell, Olivet College and the Olivet Schools. She was a member of Olivet Congregational Church and a former church trustee and deaconess until transferring her membership to Charlotte Congregational Church after moving off the farm and into Charlotte.

She delivered and served Meals on Wheels for years, belonged to the Charlotte Senior Center, Olivet Senior Citizen Center and Farm Bureau, was an active member of the Bellevue Whirlaway Square Dancers' Club and Battle Creek Area Square Dance Association, and served in Jail Ministry. Esther enjoyed homemaking, camping, crafts, and serving people, but most of all she loved her family.

Surviving are: her daughter and son-in-law, Roxie and Dennis Zuercher of West Lafayette, IN; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Dawn Horn of Grand Blanc and Rande and Fran Ahern Horn of Ferndale. She has 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Stanley Horn on June 6, 2016. Also preceding her in death were her parents, four brothers, William, Robert, Earl and Joseph Young and one sister, Margaret Harrington.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 20, 2016 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Pastor Dennis Zuercher officiating. Burial for both Stanley and Esther was on Monday in the Fort Custer National Cemetery at Augusta.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association.
