Harold J. Aita, 79, of Las Vegas, NV, died Sunday, June 15, 1997, of cancer. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Shawnee, KS. Friends may call 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the Amos Funeral Home, Shawnee, KS, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Nathan Adelson Hospice, 4141 S. Mr. Aita was born March 16, 1918, in Council Bluffs, IA, to Frank J. and Stella (Scherer) Aita. He married Martha Ring on May 23, 1941, in Kansas City, KS, and they were married for 43 years prior to her death in 1984.
As a longtime resident of Kansas City, Mr. Aita graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1935 and attended Kansas City, KS, Junior College, before taking employment with Union Pacific Railroad as a mechanical supervisor in 1936. He worked for the Union Pacific for 44 years as a supervisor in both Kansas City and Salina, KS.
Mr. Aita was involved with the 3&2 baseball organization as a coach for many years, was instrumental in the building of Segner Field and also coached C.Y.O. football for St. Agnes Catholic School.
He was a member of the Union Pacific Old Timers and the Knights of Columbus Council 601, Salina, KS. He served two terms as Grand Knight, was elected Knight of the Year in 1975 and was given an honorary Fourth Degree lifetime membership in March 1997.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Mary Suzanne and John Monteil, Sr., Kansas City, KS, Michael and Sheila Aita, Kansas City, MO, Anne Patrice and Martin Gough, Lenexa, KS, Monica and Merlin Miller, Kalona, IA, and Martin Aita, Omaha, NE; two sisters, Helen Preston, Golden Valley, AZ, and Gertrude Ireland, Shawnee, KS; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Harold and Martha Aita also hosted foreign exchange students, Rita Hidalgo Corrella from Guatemala and John and Tom Bodden from Honduras as members of the Aita household.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Francis; and his fishing buddy, Rodney Ireland.
