Hopton Borders Rites Tomorrow - Burial Will Take Place at Harmony Church
Funeral services for Abner Hopton Borders, one of Calhoun's prominent pioneer citizens, who died shortly after noon Wednesday at the Borders' residence just off Pelham Road, will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock at Harmony Church with the Rev. L. N. Claxton officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Usrey in charge of arrangements. One of the best known and most respected men in this section, Mr. Borders, who was 87 years of age at the time of his death, had served two terms as sheriff of Calhoun County, an office now held by one of his sons, and his tenure of office was marked by a fine record for law observance. Surviving Mr. Borders are his widow, Mrs. Annie M. Borders; three sons, Sheriff W. L. Borders of Anniston, J. H. Borders of Newport News, Va. and E. A. Borders of Ragland; one brother, R. L. Borders of Gadsden and one sister, Mrs. Mae Ford of Decatur, Ala. Active pallbearers will be H. Leaman Lloyd, Richard Gibson, Horace T. Green, Dalton Swann, Charles A. Hamilton and Charles Wilson.

Sheriff "Hop" Borders
The measure of a man's worth to society often can be measured by the respect and esteem of his fellow citizens, especially when these were established over a long period of years. Abner Hopton Borders, twice Sheriff of Calhoun County, held the respect and admiration of his fellow citizens; he was a man of honor and integrity.
The tall, striding, white haired figure is gone. His keen blue eyes are closed. But the imprint of his life and works will live in Calhoun County for a long time. A man of character indelibly impresses the community in which he lives, and his deeds live long after.
Abner Hopton "Hop" Borders lived a useful life and he will long be remembered.
